Welcome to ESI’s Spring 2009 Newsletter

With this newsletter we are pleased to present our updated website www.esinternational.com, which has been revised to reflect better the diverse ways that ESI provides support and advice to many industries and governmental bodies in the UK and internationally.  We have also adopted newer technology to support this which enables easier updating and helps us to provide more timely information and advice and communications with our customers.

Consultancy

ESI is a leading technical specialist environmental consultancy delivering practical solutions for our clients through application of our expertise in soil and groundwater science and related disciplines.  You may access specific advice and support from us already, but to give you a broader overview of our main interests and strengths we present a summary below, with links to more detailed information on our website.  In each aspect of our work the common theme is the application of sound science based on expertise in subsurface fluid flow and contaminant transport, which enables us to deal effectively with problems related to the natural environment and mans interaction with it, and to advise clients on the best ways to manage environmental risks and liabilities.

  •
Water Resources.   ESI is a recognised leader in water resources assessment and management.  Our main activities are related to water resources, particularly groundwater and its interaction with surface water, and we advise on water supplies, sustainable catchment management, deployable outputs, climate change and flood risk.  Our regional water resource models are widely used across the UK as the basis for water resource investigations and management.
  •
Dewatering, groundwater control, and environmental impact assessment .  ESI works on major infrastructure projects such as mines, tunnels and highways as well as aggregates and other quarrying schemes, using quantitative assessment methods alongside robust environmental monitoring schemes to demonstrate the nature and extent of environmental impacts of such schemes on the water environment, and to design and implement suitable mitigation measures.
  •
Waste Management.   ESI is recognised for its work relating to the assessment and management of environmental risks associated with landfill, and associated environmental monitoring and compliance.  We work extensively for the main UK waste management companies and the nuclear industry advising on robust risk based design and performance assessment, and on the quantification of contaminant migration and fate from existing and closed landfill sites.  Our services include hydrogeological risk assessments, environmental permits, and landfill monitoring and reporting.  We also assist with waste management plans in our brownfield development work, negotiating suitable agreements with the regulatory bodies to ensure suitable materials reuse and sustainable good practice.
  •
Land Quality .  ESI is an industry leader in the assessment and remediation of subsurface contamination associated with most types of land use worldwide.  As a leading science-based consultancy we have provided advice to many industries and regulatory bodies using our quantitative risk assessment expertise to design appropriate sustainable remediation schemes for problem sites, or to demonstrate the appropriate level of cleanup required, where necessary, to be protective to human health and the environment.
  •
Ground Source Heating and Cooling.   We have provided thermogeology expertise to industrial and commercial clients over many years to help deliver sustainable energy solutions for schemes from the very largest groundwater cooling systems in the UK through to smaller energy solutions for commercial buildings in the UK and Italy.  Our modelling based design and regulatory approval services can help clients save very significantly on expenditure on such systems and ensure that, once installed, heat pump systems deliver the reductions in carbon emissions and costs that they should.  Click here for an introduction to Ground Source Heating and Cooling.
  •
Environmental Due Diligence.  ESI has developed innovative due diligence advisory services through joined up thinking and new technologies applied to monetised risk assessments and rapid site assessment services, giving our clients a significant competitive advantage with clear commercial advice where liabilities need to be quantified and managed during corporate and property transactions.
