Water Quality and Groundwater Protection

Groundwater was once thought of as a safe and reliable water resource, protected from pollution by the natural filtering capacity of the ground.  However, recent problems with rising nitrate concentrations, regular reports of sources affected by hydrocarbon spills and outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis have demonstrated that groundwater is vulnerable to pollution.  Furthermore, once polluted, groundwater takes a long time to clean up.

There are two key components to water quality and groundwater protection.  Firstly, effective monitoring of groundwater to identify areas at risk and to establish where trends of deteriorating water quality exist.  Secondly, preventing contaminants entering the groundwater by application of legislation.

ESI staff have a unique blend of skills and experience that is of relevance.  We have a strong track record in helping clients to develop and manage their monitoring programmes and to process and interpret the resultant data.  This includes experience in implementing and operating telemetry systems with water quality alarms.  We also have a strong track record in developing a good understanding of the effects of groundwater flows on the quality of water at abstraction boreholes.
