Schedule 4 (Emissions and Monitoring) of an Environmental Permit for a landfill site typically includes specific monitoring requirements for landfill gas, surface water, groundwater, and leachate (where appropriate). It is the operator’s responsibility to ensure that monitoring is under taken at the frequencies, and for the determinands, specified in the site permit. Reporting requirements are also stipulated. Typically brief quarterly reports are required which should include an overview of all environmental monitoring undertaken in the relevant quarter, and a summary of any exceedences of permit compliance levels that have occurred. More comprehensive reporting is typically required on an annual basis. These annual reports allow for a more thorough review of the environmental monitoring data that has been obtained during the year and an assessment of any patterns or trends that are seen within the data, particularly in relation to any compliance level exceedences that may have occurred.
