Groundwater Risk Assessment of Contaminated Land

With the arrival of the Groundwater Regulations (1998) and implementation of the Environmental Protection Act (1990) Part llA there is a pressing need for contaminated land risk assessment to be applied in a consistent scientifically defensible manner.

This course is based on current Environment Agency guidance and methodologies including the Remedial Targets Methodology: Hydrogeological Risk Assessment for Land Contamination (Agency, 2006) which provides a methodology for derivation of groundwater remediation targets.

This course provides an intensive two day programme for hydrogeologists and others involved in addressing the risks to groundwater associated with contaminated land. The course objective is to equip delegates with the practical skills required to develop conceptual models. The course teaches delegates how to use relevant approaches to risk assessment consistent with the Environment Agency’s methodologies for the assessment of contamination problems, derivation of remedial targets and cost effective environmental protection.

The course provides a forum for discussion between practitioners, regulators and researchers to further the debate on quantitative risk estimation. It also explores the sensitivity of outcomes to influential parameters for typical contaminants and pathways.

Groundwater risk assessment has become a recognised cost effective approach for resolving issues and decision-making. This course is presented by leading experts involved in UK consulting and research who will highlight the main technical and practical issues involved in undertaking and communicating risk based assessments and engineering designs for cost effective environmental protection.
