Environmental Impact Assessments

Environmental Assessment is an established part of the planning process and the sequence of scoping requests, site investigation, impact assessment and negotiation with regulators has become familiar to most of those working regularly in this field. An Environmental Impact Assessment is always required if a development falls under Schedule 1 of The Town and County Planning (England and Wales) Regulations 1999, and may be required if it falls under Schedule 2 and is likely to have a significant effect on the environment due to its size, nature and/or location.
ESI can provide the services and support required throughout the process from initial scoping requests through to completion of the Environmental Statement and Environmental Impact Assessment.
ESI’s pragmatic and technically robust approach has been of value to many clients over the last decade. Discussion and negotiation between developers and the regulators to agree the scope of investigations required is essential. ESI’s experienced project managers have a strong background in this area and have excellent working relationships with staff in all regions of the Environment Agency which is important in developing a sense of trust in this process. Our senior staff are also experienced in giving Expert Witness in Public Inquiries and Court cases.
Water resources and, in particular, groundwater are a key component of many Environmental Impact Assessments. Landfills (for hazardous and non-hazardous waste) and quarries (over a certain size) are among those developments that fall under Schedule 1, and therefore require an Environmental Impact Assessment and an Environmental Statement at the planning stage.
