ESI has an enviable reputation for leading the field and developing practical methods to address the most challenging problems in hydrogeology. This has led to ESI regularly being involved in the preparation of regulatory guidance and defining best practice. Examples of this span the field of hydrogeology.
In water resource management, ESI helped the Environment Agency develop the approach and tools for abstraction licensing near sensitive rivers (IGARF), and at a larger scale, alongside the development of many of the Environment Agency’s regional groundwater models, we helped them in writing best practice guidance for groundwater modelling.
In the field of contaminated land remediation we were centrally involved in developing statistical guidance for site investigation and the use of statistical techniques. Based on our in depth experience in the development of risk assessment software, we helped the Agency develop and apply their approach to benchmarking risk assessment tools to ensure they meet the needs of risk assessment and setting appropriate remedial targets.
For the waste industry, we are actively involved in the Landfill Regulation Group and its subgroups, playing a leading role writing guidance on landfill engineering, and data management.
Drawing our staff from the brightest young hydrogeologists, ESI maintains active participation in academic hydrogeology. This involves funding of university research and encouraging staff to publish their work, and through involvement the Geological Society through active participation in running the Hydrogeology Group and on the editorial board of the Quarterly Journal of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology. This offers a uniquely talented team of specialists able to solve the most challenging problems, helping to define best practise, and to disseminate this by working with regulators to develop guidance.
